Programs don't recognize XP

I had Windows 98 and was given new disk (not upgrade) for XP - installed and
should no longer have 98. Reinstalled programs/files on XP but some
programs, such as VirusScan and MSN Messenger, don't recognize XP and I
receive notice at start-up that they're designed for different operating
system. VirusScan runs fine but not MSN Messenger (no problem not having it
but annoying). Any idea what's up?

In response to the post indicating programs need to be compatible - the
programs are compatible - they are for XP but I keep getting notice that the
programs aren't compatible which leads me to believe that somewhere there's
something still remaining from the Windows 98 operating system that is being
picked up.

The programs you are referring to ARE compatible to XP, but the
versions you have are NOT. They need to be updated or reinstalled.
