Today at the RSA conference, Bill Gates made this
announcement:
"The personal version of the final Windows AntiSpyware
software (will be) available at no additional charge to
licensed Windows customers as part of the Windows value
proposition.
The offering will offer full functionality to consumers,
including the ability to detect and remove spyware,
continual protection that helps guard against more than
50 ways that Web sites and programs can put spyware on a
PC, and protection against the latest threats
through the combined efforts of the SpyNetT community and
Microsoft researchers.
For business customers, with more complex infrastructure
support, management and deployment needs, Microsoft plans
a managed anti-spyware solution that will be available as
part of a paid solution."

Actually, what he really said was:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Just like for Windows Update software updating, we'll have solutions that
include rich administrative capabilities, and when there's a centralized
management and control requirement, we'll have a separately licensed product
that does that. But, for the basic idea of spyware as something we've got to
nip now before it gets worse than it is today, we've made the decision that
all of our Windows licensees should have that capability. And I'm very
excited that we've got this technology, and it really addresses what is a
burning need for our users.

Which is slightly different than the translation--but I suspect tht the
translated version in the Press release will be what is implemented.

Thanks for clarifying Bill. I listened in to him and this is exactly what I
heard as well. This free software is not going to be one of those free for
personal use / pay for commercial use. It is simply free. If you want the
centralized management for enterprises you must license the console version.

My added comment... This will make no difference to the MS bashers I know,
but I hope people realize exactly what Microsoft is doing. IMHO they could
have charged 15 to 20 bucks a year for subscription to this considering the
work it will take to stay on top of this problem. That is a lot of millions
per year they are giving up to provide this to users.

I don't know how the individual/enterprise thing will be worked out, but
I've no doubt they have a clear plan.

I'm very impressed with the $ commitment too--I've been avoiding saying this
here because I didn't want to dismay the "it must be free" folks, but
maintaining the spynet community functionality will cost real and
predictable $. That's why most a/v vendors have yearly costs associated
with their products.
