The program called Wordpad is a text document typing program like microsoft
works or microsoft word. etc
I dont have the program anymore and dont know what happened to it. Must of
accidentally deleted it.
Anyway I'm having trouble resinstalling that component of Windows. I try
resinstalling it through the Windows XP Setup cd That I have but it doesnt
seem to work.
I have went to "add or remove windows components" section in control panel
to add it again but The setup activity always says that the wrong disk is in,
even though it is the right disc.
Since this is the only way I know how to reinstall this component of windows
I tried playing around to see if I could help myself but so far nothing.
Below is what I also tried.
I tried browsing the disc but I found a "WORDPAD.EX_" which is weird. It
should be "WORDPAD.EXE" not ".EX_"
I know this .ex_ means its a compressed version of the file, but I've tried
to move it from the cd to the desktop, thinking it might help but it didnt.
This might sound stupid but, the standard way didnt work, because there were
certain files my dumb computer couldn't read on the disc.
Maybe theres a problem with the disc. Anyway I really want to get the
Wordpad program desperately. HELP!!!!!!

You need to expand the WORDPAD.EX_

Type the following in to the Run dialog box

expand e:\i386\wordpad.ex_ "%programfiles%\Windows NT\Accessories"

Where {e:} is your CD drive letter.

Also Wordpad is a protected system file, Windows XP should have
automatically replaced the file (if Windows File Protection is not disabled)
from the "dllcache" folder located in "c:\windows\system32". The "dllcache"
folder is a hidden folder, simply type "%windir%\system32\dllcache" in the
run dialog box to display the contents of the "dllcache" folder. Is the
WORDPAD.EXE file present in the "dllcache" folder?

What happens when you navigate to:

"%programfiles%\Windows NT\Accessories"

Is the WORDPAD.EXE file there? If it is then simply create a shortcut for
the file in your Start Menu.

If Windows File Protection is working on your machine, you cannot delete or
move Wordpad.exe from %programfiles%\Windows NT\Accessories, it will just be
recreated.

What happens if you type: wordpad into Start | Run and click OK?

Wordpad.exe lives in
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

The Wordpad.exe in
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories
is the one that is used. The other one is a backup.

If you cannot find Wordpad.exe, try this.

Compressed files have the underscore at the end (_).

You have to EXPAND a compressed file. .EX_ expands to .EXE

WORDPAD.EX_ is the compressed version of wordpad.exe

Open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |

Type or paste this line:

EXPAND X:\I386\WORDPAD.EX_ %programfiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe

Note:
Change that first X to your CD drive letter first!

There is only one space in that entire line...

WORDPAD.EX_ %programfiles between the _ and %

Hope this helps. Let us know.
