Program that keeps track of our ng posts to Agent?

F

fitwell

I have multiple instances of Agent because that works best for me.
However, I'll often forget I have something posted as each instance
has many ngs.

Is there an app out there that can automatically read the ng files and
flag all our posts, for example? I'm not fussy, just something that I
can launch and it lists all _my_ posts, preferably that allows us to
toggle between individual messages and yet with click of button, we
can also see "by thread".

Hoping there's something like this.

Thanks! :blush:D

Google Groups search user name?

Why to have so many "multiple instances of Agent"?

Do you understand usenet? Need a better news reader?

What's wrong with a watch filter on your name/mail address? Together
with a view on watched messages?

Just wondering why an external app would be required. :)

Then again: Version 3.x can handle multiple news instances in one
instance of agent. So that could be a way "forward" too,

<sigh> You know, it can get pretty tough when people question why
things are done a certain way <g>.

The obvious answer is because it works.

I already have the watch filter. I need some way, and yes, external
seems a heck of a lot easier, to keep an eye of posts IN CHRONOLOGICAL
ORDER.
Just wondering why an external app would be required. :)

That's why.

Over a hundred newsgroups I post to and monitor. I have various user
names so that when I google, it's easier for me to find what I'm
looking for.

I archive a lot, this external app would also serve as a cataloguer.
Then again: Version 3.x can handle multiple news instances in one

Yes, but would it do what was needed? I'd just have all 100+ in one
spot! Phew.

My health has improved somewhat. I am less on the computer than
before as I am more active. This coincides, only coincidentally, with
having had 2 jobs including this current one, where I'm putting in a
lot of overtime and even working weekends now. I just do not have the
time anymore to keep up with my ngs manually like before. RL just
doesn't let me do that anymore (hence why I've not been as frequent a
participant as I would like in this ng, for example).

At least with a cataloguer of my posts under my various usernames,
this would be easier to do and I'd not miss post response for weeks on
end as sometimes happens now because I've forgotten I've posted
something!

And if there is an app out there that keep track of our messages and
gives us means to see them individually or to show them grouped by
thread, along with grouping them by ng and by username, it would be
easy for that app to do as it would just have to access the Agent
folders.

I'll keep looking. I'll take a look at this later version you
mention, but I'm not sold on it by any means. My old Agent version
works just fine and I have things set up a certain way already that
I've used for quite some time now. To have ALL the ngs accessible in
one "instance", wow, that would be way too much to scroll through,
etc., anyway. My tried-and-true system keeps this all down to
manageable chunks and I don't feel overwhelmed. Just need a
cataloguer.

Thanks anyway.

You could make a few desks and have them in some semblance of order,
about the way you have them now.

And 3.2 promises to have multiple profiles too, so you can be fitwell
here and someone else in some other group - automatically. Which you
can sort of do even in 1.91.

Or you could put your various names and email addresses in global
search (ctrl-G), and search for all responses to your posts at once.
(Keeping a kill filter on yourself, of course, so you wouldn't have to
wade through your own posts.)

"Desks" would allow him to have far more functionality than he has
now. Each "Desk" can be like each instance of Agent that he currently
has PLUS the added convenience of being able to add/delete desks
quickly/easily.

That is the way I would do things if I wanted to keep using Agent with
this type of requirement.

If he only marks his own posts as "read", in a new download, then it
is easy to find them. From there he can expand the thread(s) to see
replies.

Regards, John.

I never read my own posts - I don't say much that's of interest to me.

Wouldn't adjusting your medication be easier? :)

Best solution for you would be to run a local news server. That way all
the posts are on disk for as long as you want and nicely searchable.

Leafnode is probably the best choice <http://www.leafnode.org>, but it
only runs on *NIX machines.

Go to <http://www.newsreaders.com>, they have the canonical list of
tools for handling news, both free and $ware.

Oh, right. *Much* easier to scroll through them all by scrolling only
through parts of the total in multiple instances of the reader. <sigh>

Interesting idea. I dl 3.1 to try it and after a couple of hours came
back to 1.91. In future I'll give it a try. Just no more time now.

Thanks.

I got through all of that and more but got stumped on where to put the
usernames. Gave up for now and went back to my old version. I didn't
really see a need yet to upgrade. Everything works fine as it is and
searching through posts, globally, isn't what I had in mind. More of
a cataloguer approach that I could get at more easily than remembering
to do searches.

But who knows down the road ... just no more time to fiddle with 3.1.
It's neat, that's for sure, but it didn't seem to save me anything,
ultimately.

Thanks. Not what I had in mind, but I'll keep these posts for future
reference for when things change.

Multiple instances ?
100 + newsgroups you post to ?
Various user names ?

If I was a pyschiatrist I would have a name for your personality.

;)

<g>

No, just means it's a heck of a lot easier to google for my threads.
Only fitwell is constant. The rest I change periodically as I access
past records frequently enough to warrant this. Makes googling a lot
easier.

And, p.s., only talking about 6 usernames at any given moment. I keep
ngs grouped by "like". Easier to find them. And the range of groups
is broad.

Thanks.
