Program refuses to be uninstalled

I can't uninstall Avast! from my machine. I have tried manually
deleting but access is denied. I tried using Unlocker but they still
refuse to be deleted. I prompt Unlocker to delete on next boot, which
it never does. I try disabling it on Services but access is still
denied. I try running avast setup again to install and then uninstall,
but the setup refuses to run.

Any idea on how to expunge this bastard from my box? Thanks in advance.

There is probably an app for that (aswclear5.exe). I think you use this
in Safe Mode.

You can also boot with a Linux LiveCD, and do file system maintenance.
Both NTFS and FAT32 read/write are supported out of the box now. Ubuntu
is one example of many. (Ubuntu may not be the best, but it's popular.)

That will be sufficient, unless (like a malware would), the files
are recreated by software still running on the machine.

You can also scan the affected disk, offline, with a Gentoo based
LiveCD from here. (The 196MB file is an ISO9660 file you can use
to burn a CD. Use Nero or Imgburn, to create the CD. That
creates a bootable CD running Gentoo, with a Kaspersky virus
scanner on it. That would be a double check that there isn't
some other problem present. When the CD boots, it will attempt to
connect to the LAN via DHCP, and can get a virus update from
the net. If not, if you download the ISO today, the files might
not be more than a week old.)

You might try Revo Uninstaller. There is a free version. It worked
for me with a Acronis product that got corrupted.

If you clicked on d/l and run when install , the install file goes
into temp file which was probably deleted and so can`t uninstall . You
have to d/l and save , then install .

Reinstall over the current installation, then uninstall from Control
Panel.

Contact Avast for more advice - yours is an application problem, not an
XP problem.

Problem's resolved. I was reluctant to enter safe mode because it
takes about 20 minutes on my machine for some reason. I had no choice
so I ran that RevoUninstall in safe mode and purged the hogging piece
of shit. Everything is good now.

All of you have been useful except Nil who did not read my post.

Gracias.
