Program Installation Problems

When trying to install program error message :
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose 'Close' to terminat the application.

Please any help on how to update system to allow
installation of programs would help.
