16 bit windows program error

B

buddmann

I am having trouble installing a few different programs, because of a 16 bit
windows program error.
it says"16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINNT\system32\autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose "close" to terminate the
application"

Any help would be much appreciated

Ignore the warning window and carry on. Just click the x in the top right corner. Usually there isn't a problem. If on the other hand your wowexec.exe isn't running you may want to go into the windows/system32 folder and double click to activate it. wowexec.exe is the 16 bit application launcher.

I found and clicked it but it is still giving the same message.

I have been having the exact same problem. I tried the wowexec.exe and got
the same results as buddman.

I have the same problem and have tried both your suggestion and the so-
called Microsoft solution - Article 324767.

I still can't open any Dos based programs.

Can anyone please help?

Good news folks...

A Downloader Trojan (TrojanDownloader.Win32.Dia.a)placed a program
called Winad Client on my machine. This is the program that has been
removing autoexec.nt and messing with config.nt & command.com.

Last week I replace all those files but after a reboot this weekend
appearantly the 16 Bit issue came back which i did not discover this
until this morning, only hours after Norton Antivirus Found the
Trojan.

Norton 2004 could not remove the trojan. Nor AdAware SE could not
locate it. But PestPatrol (http://www.pestpatrol.com/) found the
trojan and removed it.

After some searches on this Trojan, I discovered the installed
"Windupdater" program on machine is called Winad Client and it was
easily removed via Control Panel/Ad-Remove Programs (how silly).
Ironically afer the program is removed your browser is forwarded to a
Windupdater Url promoting Spyware removal.

Further scans show no more Downloader Trojan and the 3 Windows System
Files are staying intact.
