Hello,

Some problem here that I hope someone can assist.

I having some issues with the installation CDs that I have. When I insert
them into the CD drive, the installation screen does not appear. Windows open
up the main CD folder showing me the contents of the CD instead.

Nothing should be wrong with the cd medias, tried them on another comp, they
work fine. Unlikely that my drive is faulty as I have 2 drives and both
behaved in the same manner. The only way I can start the installation is to
right click on the drive in My Computer and select "Install..."

I tried using autoplay fixtool from MS but no problem was detected.
Everything was working fine last time. Could there be anything wrong with
some settings or a bug in the system?

I sincerely someone can help.

Thank you so much.

To change how your computer handles multimedia content
Open My Computer.
Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the device you want,
such as a digital camera or CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties.
On the AutoPlay tab, click the multimedia content type you want to
change.
Under Actions, click the action you want Windows to perform when it
detects the media type you selected.
Notes
To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
Your removable storage device must be attached to your computer for it
to appear in the My Computer folder.

Note that for _installers_ "autoplay" to work you need an Autorun.inf
on the CD.

This is the confusion MS caused by using the term "autoplay" for
everything. "Autorun" is used to run installs, "Autoplay" is used to
automatically (for example) start playing a music CD when you insert
it. "Autoplay" recognizes the format of files on a CD and
automatically starts the related application.

I have been "in the business" for decades now. One thing I was
disappointed with when WinXP came out is the inability to manually
_designate_ the "autorun" feature by filenames. Win98 would remember
some filenames you used [Start]-run on, and automatically run that
same filename for the next CD with that filename.

Example-Win98: Use [Start]-run and browse to CD \install.exe, the
next time you inserted a CD with an install.exe Win98 would autorun
it.

There isn't any autorun.inf file in the CD, but what I can't figure out is,
how come it works another XP computer. It used to work on mine as well.

Are there any clues in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer for when the problem occurs.
No Information Reports please.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Another thought.

You might try downloading and installing Tweak Ui:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

The section under My Computer -Autoplay.

Hi Gerry,

I tried the tweak tool, it doesnt work as well. I noticed that most
installation programs will run, with the exception of my MS Office CD
(previously it was running ok). I tried using system restore but that din

Thanx so much for your followup =)
