Program Icons slow to display in Windows Explorer

Stuart

We have a problem when browsing certain directories held
on our W2K NAS.

WHen opening a folder within WIndows Explorer all the
folders and programs are listed, but the programs do not
yet have their chosen icons displaying. Instead they
display the default program icon. The explorer window then
freezes while the chosen icon is displayed. However this
can take over a minute in certain directories.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Stuart

Not sure if it will help for your particular situation, but you might
try increasing the size of the Windows icon cache (either manually, or
using a utility).

You can do this with the free ActivIcons utility from
http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=58875
Go to its "Desktop Controls" screen and increase the icon cache size
to 4096. (you might also want to purge the existing icon cache - the
options for rebuilding the cache are on 2 small round buttons at the
lower/right corner. Shut down any programs running in the background,
then click the round button farthest to the lower/right corner - your
system will reboot, and the icon cache will be cleaned out.)

If you prefer to increase the cache size manually, you'll first have
to run Regedit. Then navigate down through the tree to the following
key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer
Here, you will then need to right-click the right-side pane to create
a new string value named "Max Cached Icons" with the value data set to
4096. Then save, exit and reboot.
