program halts when eg. a doc file starts Word

The program halts for several seconds (10-20) when it is
initiated by a file. E.g. if I double click on a .doc file
it halts for some time before it opens Word. It is so with
all programs even when I try to open a small .txt file.

It is very annoying. I have searched the net for an answer
but with no luck. I hope you can help.

yours sincerely,
Anders

Hi Anders,

Sounds like a background process interfering. Start by eliminating programs
from loading in the background (start/run msconfig and go to the startup
tab), and if that does not help, check the settings in your antivirus
software, they may be too aggressive.

Hi Rick,

I have tried disabling all programs listed in msconfig
startup with the same result. Disabling my antivirus also
didnt have any effect.

Do you have any other ideas? I am running on a Dell
Inspiron 500m laptop with WinXP Pro fully updated.

Thank you,
Anders

ANDERS, it sure is annoying. Go into MSCONGIG and see
which progs are fired on startup. If you run on selective
with nothing starting automatic on fireup, then you must
accept the slow response. Overall, I would rather have a
faster unit for the progs I want to run. You may also
want to check your system free capacity. Remove any giant
progs, leave only the shells to use upon CD insertion,
run diskcleanup and defrag. Get a prog like Spybot
(freeware) and it will help root out those temp internet
space hogs.
Good Luck

Thank you for the reply Bronco.

I have 20GB og free disk, about 240 MB avail of 512. The
puzzle to my problem is that applications startup as they
should with no halt when initiated from the .exe eg.
word.exe. Its only when I for instance click on a .doc
file it halts before opening the program.

I have tried disabling all startup programs with no
success.
Any ideas?

Best,
Anders

Right click a .doc file and select WORD as the program to
open that type of file, put a check mark in the box to
always remember this association.
Then you should be able to double click a file and have WORD
open it.

I am afraid you misunderstood my issue.
Word is already associated with the file. It just freezes
for some time before opening when I click the .doc file.
If I intiate Word from its executeable it starts in a
instance, normal.

Anders

Are you running WORD 2002/XP? There is a repair function on
the Help menu.

Hi Anders,

Was there a spcific point where this began happening that you can remember?
Such as after installing some Windows Update file or after installing some
specific piece of software or driver? There's no question that it is a
backgroud process taking priority over it, it's just a (not so simple)
matter of figuring out what. Try the steps here:

For some unknown reason everything is fine now. I was
using the computer, starting/closing applications and
suddently it worked.

I have rebooted several times to be sure.

Thank you for your help Rick.

Best, Anders

Best,
Anders
