Problem copying files to Flash Drive

Trying to copy about 200 files, 300 mb, to a 4gb USB Flash Drive.
The Copy procedes normally, then stops at a certain Works Doc.
The message reads " File or folder cannot be created"
The Copy procedure then halts.
The file seems fine. I can open and read it.
I re-saved it with the same name and a different name
and converted it to a Word Doc. Same result.
The file attributes are turned off. The Doc is not protected.
I eliminated the file from the copy list and
it stops at an another file.
All in all, about 30 files will not copy.
I can copy the same file list to a CD-R and
back to the hard drive without a problem.
I cannot copy them from the CD-R to the Flash.
Same message appears.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanx.

Trying to copy all of the files to the root directory of the USB flash
drive? If this is the case, then there is a limit on the number of
files that can be listed in the root directory. It is better to break
the copy into various folders. This is usually due to the type of FAT
that is being used and, in all likelihood, they are different for the
CD-R and the hard drive, allowing more files to be copied.

It would have to be FAT16 for that to apply (512 root entries). With
FAT32 there can be a bit more than 65,000 entries in any folder,
including the root. For NTFS it's practically unlimited. Long
filenames reduce the number of available entries. It might be the
problem but I rather doubt that the flash drive is formatted FAT16.

Thank you for responding.
That was the problem.
The new Flash Drive was FAT formated.
I created 4 folders on the Flash Drive
and divided the copy job into quarters.
The copy worked.

Thanx again...

Well, I'll be... I wouldn't have thought that anyone would still be
using FAT in this day and age! For all it's worth you could have
stuffed all the files in one folder only. The 512 entry limit applies
to the root folder only.

O

otis

or just convert the flash drive with

convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

I always do this when I buy one.
