profile problem after latest auto update (12-15-06)

I woke up on Friday morning to a computer that had rebooted during the
night from an auto upgrade for Windows XP home. Now when I log on to
what was the only user/admin profile on the machine, Windows doesnt
completely finish loading. It will go through the login process
without problems but then stops. Icons dont load, taskbar doesnt
appear, just stops loading anything after the background. It doesnt
freeze, it just stops working. I figured out I could still access
everything from alt+ctrl+del and using the task manager to launch
explorer. First thing was backing up all the data that I was terrified
I lost. (BTW- 20Gig takes a lot of DVDs and time....do it ahead of
time!) I found somewhere that there were problems with the update and
it was affecting XP Pro and some server things. Something to do with
read permissions for accounts and similar situation as mine happening.
Did not list anything about Home edition and consequently nothing on
how to fix it. I did end up creating a new admin account on this
machine and it seems to load without any problems. But now I'm
missing all of my apps and setup from the other profile. So how do I
fix this?! I know it has to be some kind of simple fix, but I can not
find it. Its been a couple of days and I'm turning to you guys for
help. Prefer not to have to format and start over, but I'm afraid
thats what it is coming to. Has anyone else had, heard or dealt with
this problem?! Thanks for any insight!

If the new account works fine, then just copy over the settings from the
old user account. You'll need to create a third user account from which
to work. You can delete that extra account afterwards or keep it in
case of another emergency (recommended).
