Have a look in c:\Documents and Settings. What folders can you see?

Some people have successfully recovered from this situation with a
System Restore.

Hi,

Possibly your profile is corrupt and a temporary one is being created. The
solution, should this prove to be the problem, is to create a new profile
for yourself and copy the old one into it.

How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151

Note that one step not listed in the article is that after creating the
destination profile you must log into it once first to create the necessary
file structure before you do the copy procedure.

All folders of users seem to be there ie All Users, Owner, Temp + family
names. Mine is the administrator (I think) as there is all the microsoft
stuff there. I can create a new profile and direct outlook back to my ISP etc
but main concern is all my contacts and e-mails appear to have gone. How do
i get hose back?
THanks

Do this for starters:
- Click Start / Run
- Type cmd {OK}
- Type these commands verbatim:
set user > c:\test.txt
dir "c:\Documents and Settings" >> c:\test.txt
notepad c:\test.txt
- Copy & paste the contents of this file into your reply.

There is something essential missing in your reply -
The output from this command:

dir "c:\Documents and Settings"

OK, here are the facts:
- You are currently logged on as "Neil".
- Your normal profile folder is also called "Neil".
- You currently use a profile folder called "Temp".

As I mentioned before, you can probably recover from
this mishap by doing a System Restore. If you do not
wish to do this then you can do this:
- Delete your account.
- Give the "Neil" profile folder a temporary name.
- Recreate the "Neil" account. This will create a new "Neil"
profile folder.
- Restore the original "Neil" profile folder.

And here is how it's done:
1. Reboot the machine.
2. Log on under some admin account, e.g. "User".
3. Start a Command Prompt as explained previously.
4. Type these commands:
cd /d "c:\documents and settings"
ren Neil Neil.temp
net user neil /del
net user neil SomePassword /add (select your password!)
net localgroups administrators neil /add
5. Log on as Neil. This will create a blank profile folder.
6. Take Steps 2 and 3 above once more, then type these commands:
cd /d "c:\documents and settings"
ren Neil Neil.blank
ren Neil.temp Neil

You should now be able to log on as Neil and see all
your previous settings.

On an overall note: In your first post you wrote "everything has
disappeared including all my outlook settings and hence all my
e-mails." This creates the impression that you belong to the
group of people who do not believe in regular backups of
their important files. All of them have a change of mind sooner
or later - this forum is full of their distress posts. It usually takes
a major disaster before they are willing to consider the benefit
of using a low-cost backup medium such as a 2.5" hard disk
in an external USB case. They cost very little! In your case:
How would Leonie, Louise and Noah feel if their school
projects went down the drain with no chance of recovery?

Read my post, as you have confirmed what I was thinking. Your normal user
profile is corrupt and the system is creating a temp one for your logon. You
might want to try a run of chkdsk if you haven't already, otherwise you will
need to create a new user for yourself.

Thanks

I actually have follow Nutcase Rogers' advice and recreated a new profile
under a slightly different username but taking instruction from the microsoft
website. One thing i still haven't worked out. How do i find out if all my
e-mails are in my documents and settings? All my other documents are there.
Can they be "put back" into Outlook? Point taken about backing up but i do
back up files, pictures music etc on DVD but never outlook e-mails because i
don't know how.

I suppose you're about to find out how to back up your EMail files,
because you need to restore them!

If you're using Outlook then you must copy your .pst file(s)
from the old profile folder to the new profile folder. You
must then instruct Outlook to use the copied .pst file. The
exact method depends on your version of Outlook. An
Outlook newsgroup would be the best place to obtain
further details.

If you're using Outlook Express then you must copy a whole
set of .dbx files to your new profile. Again you must instruct
OE to use them, and an OE newsgroup would be a good
place to seek more details.

Thanks for both your help - did a system restore for thursday of last week
and problem solved. V bizarre. I will shortly become the "back-up king".

Fortunately apart from my contacts this is home computer so only used for
house hold stuff - nothing complex!

Hi,

If you managed to delete some personal files containing your info you
can restore it using Active@ undelete data restoration tool. It worked
simply great for me in a simmilar situation so that can really help
you.
