I had an issue with my old PC. I reloaded the operating system on it, but am
trying to retrieve my old profiles from the original hard drive. When I go
into DOS on the other hard drive both my profile and my wifes profiles are
both locked or encrypted somehow. They both show that they are EXE files.
The other profiles are normal, but the two I need to get into are EXE's. Can
anyone help me to get into these...I have family photo's in these profiles
and want to retrieve them to burn them.

Any Help would be GREATLY appreciated...

Thank you for your help in this matter.

How are you accessing your old hard drive? If it's now
installed as a slave drive, you may be able to take ownership
of the folders. Take a look at these articles for more info on
the procedure.

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

I am booting off a boot CD that has a shell XP load on it. I cannot slave it
to my other hard drive becasue they are both SATA drives, and one of my SATA
ports is dead. The problem is the system does not recognize this as a
folder, so I cannot do any type of folder actions with it.

Does this "CD that has a shell XP load on it" have a name?

If you're using a Bart PE CD, try using this CD, it has a
number of tools which you may find helpful. A note of caution,
use any hard drive diagnostic tools as a last resort. Running
something as simple as chkdsk may leave you in a worse
situation.

You could also try using a live Linux CD such as Knoppix or
Ubuntu.

If you can see your old folders, but are denied access, you
have to boot into an environment where you can take ownership,
assign permissions, copy, and rename your old files.

You might also want to consider getting an external hard drive
enclosure and trying to access your files from a working XP
installation. Something like this,

Finally, if you're looking for help on these newsgroups, you've
got to include as much information as possible in your original
question. Mentioning the fact that you're using a live XP CD to
access your old HD because only one SATA drive can be connected
to your computer would have been helpful.

Good luck
