I was browsing through the site, and it mentions that the professional edition has improved stability. What is the stability like in the home version? Is it significantly worse than professional? I am a windows user of moderate skill, definately not a beginner, but I don't play around with too many settings. Is professional worthwhile

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

It's marketing drivel. They say this for everything they sell, incl Home.

What site have you been browsing through?
Home is EXACTLY the same OS as Pro with the exception that Pro has a few
more networking and security functions. The stability, given the same
hardware and software ,AFAIK is exactly the same.

I think that you have to be able to spell professional in order to qualify
:)

I use both versions, Pro at work and home at...er home. They are both very stable. Unless you are on a business network I see no reason for buying Pro.

Which is pure Sales force. I regard the whole idea of 'Power user' as
suspect - mostly it is used by those wanting to inflate their egos. XP
Home and Pro are identical code - if installed like mine from the MSDN
disks they use the identical files; apart from the additional features
in Pro, which it is up to the user to decide if he needs. There is
nothing whatever to make one more stable than the other, if used in the
same way

No, it's exactly the same as in Professional.

It is true that XP Professional has improved stability as
compared to older versions of Windows, but it is *not* true that
it has improved stability as compared to XP Home.

beginner, but I don't play around with too many settings. Is

It depends on your needs, but probably not. XP Professional and
XP Home are exactly the same in all respects, except that
Professional has a few features (mostly related to networking and
security) missing from Home. For most (but not all) home users,
these features aren't needed, would never be used, and buying
Professional instead of Home is a waste of money.

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

Greetings --

The two versions are _identical_ when it comes to performance,
stability, and device driver and software application compatibility,
but are intended to meet different functionality, networking,
security, and ease-of-use needs, in different environments. The most
significant differences are that WinXP Pro allows up to 10
simultaneous inbound network connections while WinXP Home only allows
only 5, WinXP Pro is designed to join a Microsoft domain while WinXP
Home cannot, and only WinXP Pro supports file encryption and IIS.

"Which is better?" That depends entirely upon the uses to which
you put your computer, the network environment in which you'll operate
it, your specific security needs, and your level of computer
knowledge.
