Is this a new MS anti-pirate item? A fellow just sent me the email
below. Sorry if
its an obvious answer but I dont have any experience using the same XP
ProductKey on multiple PCs :)

In other words, can the original installation on the desktop toasted by
an automatic file update from MS after a MS key was installed on the
laptop?

"I have installed XP Pro on two of my computers, which I think is wrong.
Anyway after installing it on my wife's laptop, calling for the the
activation numbers. My system all of a sudden asked for a password which
I have NEVER setup in the first place.

I cant get past that window, or boot into safe mode now on my computer."

A. No. Simply use the Tab key to tab through the password box and hit
enter. Then tell your frient to purchase a second license for the second
installation of Windows XP since it is an infringement of the Windows
XP license agreement to use the same license on two different computers.

You can use the following steps to enable automatic logon:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type: control userpasswords2 , and then click OK.
3. In the dialog box that appears, clear the "Users must enter a user name
and password to use this computer" check box, and then click OK.

Thanks. I'm guessing that "frient" means either friend or client. In
this case its
neither. It was just an email I got probably from my email address on my
webpage.

In any case I did a copy/paste and emailed to the person. Thanks again.
