I have a customer that had his Hard drive crash,
so I need to setup his PC again but the sticker (prod key)
has been partly peeld of (i have the first 15)
but the last 10 are missing.
Is there any way of resolving this?
or should I just tell him he needs buy another copy of XP?

You can try the utility and see if it match with the 15 digits you do have,
if it does then there is a good chance the key the tool displays is good. If
it does not match then the OEM used their internal key to install Windows
and the sticker is what you would use for the CD you have.

if the hard drive is dead you can't get the key but if it will boot
their are free programs to retrieve key doesn't matter if oem or retail.
I have an oem version and no problems upgrading.

In the situation described (hard disk drive crash) a utility to find the
product key of an installed version will not work since there is not an
installed version to access. I have a similar problem with a Dell COA
on a Dimension 2400. The last 2 characters of the Product Key are
gouged off. Some previous owner apparently tried to take the COA from
the machine and was frustrated. The Dell registry number (14
characters) is fully legible. I have a request into them to recover
the the Product Key. Ironically the first technician suggested a "key
finder" utility for an installed version. I don't have an installed
version to access either. Installed new drive to replace a faulty
drive. The world suffers from an inability to conceptualize these
situations. If someone finds a favorable answer (or an unfav answer),
please email me at (e-mail address removed)

Bad luck on the customer's part, making a difficult service
problem. There is no real solution unless the PK is recovered
or substituted by the manufacturer or original OEM. Trying to
do otherwise, even as a "Good Samaritan" may result in future
issues, now that WGA validation has been strengthened.

That means it's an OEM version which in turn means that the key
he needs can be obtained by contacting the OEM where he bought
the machine. Simple.
