It's probably because your friend's CD is the wrong TYPE - ie it's retail
when your key is OEM, Home when yours is Pro - get the idea?

Yeah, i looked and it was xp pro, hm

thanks anyway

There are different versions and types of Windows XP media.

First - you have the versions - the Home, Professional, Media Center
Edition, Tablet PC, x64, etc...
Second - you have the license type - OEM, Retail, Retail Upgrade, MSDN,
Volume, etc...

In order for you to utilize someone elses media - a few things must be
true... It must be the same version (Home/Professional/MCE/TPC/x64/etc...)
and it must be the same media type (OEM/Retail/MSDN/Volume) as the product
key you attempt to utilize is for. Also - if the borrowed copy was made for
a particular brand of computer - it could be what is known as 'BIOS locked'
and without some modification, that CD may not properly installaed on
another name brand/model of PC.
