product key invalid?

I have tried installing SP2 on my Windows XP Pro computer, but it said that
the product key was invalid. I have installed XP Pro using a Volume License
CD I got from work, but it was a copy of the original CD. Could that have
anything to do with this? Probably so.

No, it has to do with the Product Key you used to install it with.

And what would you think could be the problem with the PK? <G> Caps key
on? No, they would get and error message about that. Typing it in wrong,
yeah, that must be it. But then again the IT person could be a prankster and
gave the OP the wrong key. LOL or Ya think they may be just trying to bypass
the stinking PA? Another possible reason is they are trying to steal it.
More than likely they don't have a legitimate reason to expect the PK to be
valid and posting here shows they are just naive.
Anyone given a valid VL key and CD media would ask the person that knows why
it is not working and that would be the one that gave it to them not in a
newsgroup.

Maybe your company "rewrote" theXP pro CD with Microsoft and disabled some
features like our company did. Our company removed alot of components that
are normally found on the bookshelf version of XP that you buy in the store.
They also rewrote Office 2002. Maybe that option is disabled and that is
why you get an invalid product key. Just a thought if this is a CD that
your work provided to you. Aren't computers fun?

I'm betting on the IT prankster.

Yes, that has a lot to do with it.
If you have a legitimate reason to install Windows XP under your
companies license, go back and tell them you need a valid key.

That is the question you are answering, and that the CD is a burned copy
has nothing to do with not being able to install SP2. I know
differently.

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

Alternatively, if you have a legitimate license and real installation
CD for a qualifying OS that is not installed on another computer, you
could purchase the desired version of WinXP Upgrade and perform a clean
installation.

Kurt, you even have to comment to my posts when you have nothing to say.
Read my ENTIRE post instead of picking one part and making an incorrect
assumption.
The fact a Volume License key you have used is valid is no proof others are
good or not.
As usual your incorrect assumption has lead to a wrong conclusion.

I referred the OP back to the company, the best source for valid facts.
Also referenced other facts on a website.
Both these items you conveniently ignore further enabling you incorrect
conclusion.

If you are a troll, continue posting as you do ignoring what does not suit
your agenda and closing with an insult to give your ego the boost you feel
it needs.
Now go ahead and boost your ego again by having the last word...as surely
you need to.

I didn't even read most of your rant about me.

Juppy: "Ryan; Yes, that has a lot to do with it."

What does the CD being a copy of the original have to do with it?
Please enlighten us.
