Hello,

I'm one of the lucky few, who has both Vista RC1+my key from Beta 2. At
least I thougt...

When i trying to add in my key from the mail i received from Microsoft, when
I downed Beta 2, I get the following error:

The product key you have entered will not work with this edition of Windows
Vista.

You must either run Windows Vista setup or enter a business N key....

Anyone bright ideas about this one ??

Hi ... I notice that Microsoft provided a link to download RC1 but had no

good would it be after downloading RC1 and can't install it ?

Have you tried requesting a new key from the MS connect site? There should be an area on that site that allows you to request a software key for vista as long as you’re an approved beta tester with them.

Install without a key. Select Windows Vista Ultimate on the next page that appears and then once you are in Vista, Activate using your beta 2 key.

A key is not needed for installation.
Leave the key blank.
Then a screen will come up asking which version to install, Ultimate,
Starter etc.
Choose which to install.
You will not be able to activate without a Product Key.
It will expire at 14 days since it is not activated.

Hello,

I also have this problem and if I knew I needed a key I would have waited or
not downloaded it at all. As stated, it wasn't very clear before you
downloaded it and now I have it installed on my laptop and while I'm enjoying
it what do I do in 14 days when the time runs out?

This is a "public" pre-release for testing and to be lap rats for Microsoft,
no problem, but how do you givethis out to the general public and not fully
explain or provide a key?

This is pretty upsetting honestly, lets see what Microsoft has to say about
this when I call them. I know they say they do not support beta's but dang it
man...if we are helping you by being your lap rats...WORK WITH US, so we can
be the best beta testers we can be.

The whole issue just shows poor...poor planning.

If anyone knows how I can register, please let me know.

Where did you get the link to download it?
As far as I know, invitations were only sent out to Beta 2 testers who were
originally given a key and they were asked to use that. If you got the link
to download it posted in a forum or wherever then you should really direct
your anger at those posters as they did not give you the all important key
information.
You can't diss Microsoft if you were not invited in the first place.

I bet Microsoft didn't instruct you to go to the download page..
So, officially you cannot even know the Adress where to get it until you are
in the CPP ;-)

When the Website was working I offered the link as many websites and forums
also did.

But I for myself and most others said clearly : it will be useless to you if
you have no Key.

Be glad to see that it installs without a key, that is very kind of
Microsoft, because if not It would be a real useless disk to folks like
you. Also be glad they didn't change the Keyrange, so that B2 Keys still
work. They easily could have stopped old Keys to work with RC1.

Wait for the CPP to reopen. Play 14 days with it until this happens.

Use the Beta2 key if you have it, otherwise wait for the CPP to open up and
sign up. In the meantime you can install RC1 without a key. It will run
for 14 days.

Instead of reinstalling everything I´ll make an image of my system HD and
restore it every 14 days... 12 actually cause I didn´t finish installing
everything yet.

Just google this: BootIt NG

You download the app (the basic functions are free), execute the app and it
will create an iso file.
Burn that file to a CD.
Now you can boot your PC using that CD, install the app (it´s kind of a
"DOS" screen).
Use the maintenance tools.
Then select the HD or partition you want to keep and click copy. You´ll be
creating an image file that can be restored later.
Select a partition where you want to save the image and click paste. Choose
the maximum size of the image. This way it creates image files that can fit
a CD or DVD. The app automaticaly compact and split the image.

I didn´t explain everything but you can get started with this basic
tutorial.
The restore process is very straight forward. Just boot from the CD and look
for the restore option. Usualy it takes about 10 to 30 minutes depending on
your image size and speed.

I am getting the same error message. I have a beta2 key that worked on the
beta 2, but not on RC1. No problem, I thought as MS sent me an RC1 key.
However this also gives the same problem. I'm getting an error saying that
this key is not good on this edition of MS Vista. I have installed Home
Basic (on my laptop) is it possible my key is for a different version of RC1
(ultimate, etc.) and won't work on Home Basic?

What is the phone number to call MS. I tried "activating" while
disconnected from the Internet, but it just gives me the same error vs a
number to call MS.

The CPP Product Keys are only for Vista Ultimate. You will probably have to
reinstall Vista and then activate.

That's odd that MS would do that. When I ran the install it recommended I
install Home Basic on my laptop (graphics are not very good). Odd that they
would not supply me with a code that would work on what they recommended.
If I reinstalled and chose Home Basic, I'd guess the key would fail again?

Solution: I found a phone number to call... they talked me through it and
give me some activation code that worked. So that's cool!

Thanks for the help though!

Well good to know that they will give out a Product Key for something other
than Ultimate. Great job on the persistence in seeking all possible
solutions! Thanks for the information.
