about a year ago I ditched XP Pro to go back to Win 98
SE. I did this because XP and Everquest (my main hobby
at the time) didn't like each other much.

But now that I no longer play Everquest, and Win98
crashed, I went back to XP Pro. Unfortunately, when
downloading the service pack, I got an error that said my
product ID was invalid. I tried reactivating XP, but it
just sits there, doing nothing when I run msoobe. I
didn't have this problem before.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Todd,

SP1 has been programmed to detect known fake product keys and it looks that
it has interpreted yours as one. Is you version of XP dodgy?

No, it's the original, out of the box version.

What's funny is, I have downloaded and installed SP1 when
it first came out. My product key was valid then, and it
should be valid now.

A check to make: A lot of copies have been put out by unscrupulous
parties - often selling to innocent people - which have used one of a
couple of pirated keys, with no payments going back to Microsoft.
Microsoft has explicitly prevented machines that were installed with
these keys from installing SP1. Check in Control Panel - System for the
Product ID number under your name - if it fits

XXXXX-640-0000356-23XXX
or
XXXXX-640-2001765-23XXX

Where X represents any digit, you have one of these keys. You can
approach the vendor for redress and provision of a legitimate copy,
threatening MSoft legal department - if no satisfaction, you could try a
report of the details to
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/default.asp
