product ID number

I want to upgrade from windows me to windows xp. I don't
have the product ID number. I got this from a friend who
installed something else on their computer. They don't
know the ID number what can be done.
 
Fran, if you friend deleted the WinXP install and moved on, you may have
to contact MS as original owner and explain the situation. If not then
there's a utility to extract the Product Code Key. Check here, but it has
to be used on a working version
