Hi there,

I currently have a Dell Dimension 8200, which has a P4 1.9GHz processor
(Socket 478), Intel 850 chipset with 400MHz system bus.

I am planning on upgrading to a "P4 2.80GHz Socket 478 CPU (533Mhz 512k
cache)".

Would this processor fit and be compatible with my Dell?

Any assistance or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,

T.

Check your Dell manual (or download one) and see what the maximum
processor is. I don't know offhand at what point Intel changed the pins
on their P4s, so knowing that might even make getting the Dell
motherboard information unimportant...

It may or may not run on that motherboard, but since it's only a 400mhz bus,
even if it does run your processor it is only going to run at that speed as
well, and not at 533.
That will make your 2.8g cpu run at 2.1g I believe. Not much of an upgrade.
I think you can get a 2.4 400mhz P4 which would be a decent upgrade.

I suggest that you check your system's specifications at support.dell.com. I
see that model was made with both an 850 and 850E chipset.

If you have an 8200 with the original 850 chipset, it is intended only for
400 MHz FSB (front side bus) CPUs. If you have an 850E system, it also
supports 533 MHz. (It may require, or benefit from, PC1066 RDRAM.) The
system might run happily enough with a 533 MHz chip at 400 MHz, although a
2.8 GHz/533 chips would only run at 2.1 GHz.

The fastest 400 MHz CPU Dell lists for the machine is 2.4 GHz.

Good luck.

I just "terminated" a similar machine (it's in the closet now as a
backup). Mine had RDRAM - is that yours? If so, I upgraded the
processor but my memory is that 2.6 was as high as you could go with
that particular model.
