Processor Up-grade

I have a MS PC which could run faster for game playing, is it
possible/sensible to up-grade the processor?

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Motherboard Model 6A6LVM4A
Motherboard Vendor MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD
Chipset Model VIA KT266/A Chipset
BIOS Model Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG

Video card performance is as important as anything re. games.. look at what
the games recommend and then purchase the necessary hardware..

I just upgraded a client's kids pc so he could get faster game playing,
especially online. His problem wasn't the video card but the processor.
So, we went with an Anthon 64 3400. Now he's getting 75 FPS online.
 
Thx for the suggestion but I have upgraded the video card and memory, but
games still run too slowly on occasions infact the pc can sound under stress!
