process running at startup

I have just totally reformatted and reinstalled xp home, apart from the
obvious xpsp2 and updates + Office 2003, adaware and panda AV I have no
other progs installed. When I boot up, it takes about 1.30mins to reach
desktop then I can hear something processing in the background which stops
me from using any of the progs until it stops. A look in processes (Task
manager) reveals no clues as to what it is and a look into my start up
(msconfig) shows only my Java, spool drivers, AV and monitor. I have no bugs
or spyware what could be causing this?

Your AV application could be performaing a basic scan.

Your email application may be attempting to download incoming mail.

Windows may be attempting to scan for new devices.

Windows may be attempting to scan for updates.

All the above are possible especially if you also have your internet
connection active on startup, this is the case for most cable and ADSL [DSL]
connections.

Java isn't needed at startup and should run only when required by the browser.

Depending upon the amount of memory available on your PC, there may be some
amount of paging from swap file on the Hard Drive into memory and back again.

Thx Bar,
I think that you may be right, as windows detect new hardware keeps telling
me that it is looking for a network controller. I am unsure what this device
is and what software is it looking for?
