I have a wireless adaptor in my laptop. The laptops
wireless confections are managed by Windows XPs built-in
wireless manager. Anyways there are other wireless
networks in my area and every time windows finds one it
kills my current connection to my network and displays a
prompt bubble above the systray that says "One or more
wireless networks are available"! It won't let me do
anything on my network unless I double click my wireless
connection, select my network from the list, and then
click connect.

This is a well documented problem with Windows' built-in
wireless manager and many people experience it.

How can I fix this stupid bug!

Thanks,

Are you broadcasting your SSID? Do you have Network Authentication checked?
Are you connecting via 802.11 b or g?
I've read that it is advisable to broadcast your SSID to avoid the exact
problem you are describing. Some 802.11b adapters and routers do not support
Network Authentication. Make sure your network is the only one listed in the
Preferred Networks.

Thanks,

1) Broadcast your SSID.
2) Disable "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks".

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

braudcasting your SSID is a security risk! that is not an
acceptible solution. and i do have that
option "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks"
unchecked.

no go windows xp's built-in wireless manager just sucks!

You might be interested in this long thread over on the DSL Reports forums concerning the issue of
broadcast or no broadcast of SSID enhancing your network security...

Or to quote Eric Hicks, MS-MVP Mobile Devices, over on the microsoft.public.pocketpc.wireless news
group awhile back...

"Yeah most problems I see like this are caused by ap's with disabled beacons. It's like a plane
trying to land at an airport with the runway lights turned off, with the naked eye you can't see it
(netstumbler) but with the right tools (kismet, airsnort) it's very clear."

Personally, I broadcast my network SSID and take other measures to secure access to my home LAN
including WPA-PSK with a very long random key...
