Problems with wireless internet connection and IP address

Having problem connecting to internet wirelssely; wireless broadband with BT
was working fine for ~4 weeks then last weekend suddenly stopped working.
Clicked on 'Repair' and it said that it 'could not renew IP address'. Have a
BT Voyager 2091 router and belkin network card. Spoke to BT help and they
said..."when reconnected system using ethernet cable, the system is giving an
exact IP, but when connected wirelsslessly it is assigning a number 169.254.
etc" apparently this should be 192. or something; there is no problem with
signal. Both the router and belkin adaptor working fine. BT help suggested to
contact Microsoft to help as it is "not allowing to connect wirelssly". They
also mentioned about uninstalling and reinstalling Winsock software. Can
anyone please help?

Hi Jules :)

YOu don't mention the version of Windows you are using, or what type of
connection (i.e.e dialup, cable, DSL), but, you might try the following and
see if that will help.

Winsock Fix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip
WinsockXP Fix for XP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

However, you might also check to see if Automaticlly detect settings is
Checked.

Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections (TAB) > LAN Settings
(Button).
Make sure the "use a Proxy server..." is Unchecked
And be sure to Check the "Automatically detect settings" and see if that
helps:

also....have you gone into the View Network connections in the Control Panel
and selected the wireless network? Is it a viable network?

Hope this helps.

I have seen this problem of getting bogus Ips from switches that have locked
up but are connected to a router that is handling the DHCP. Be sure to power
down and reboot both your modem AND your router/switch. and see if that helps.

Hi sleepy52 :)

Thank you for the additional information. Hopefully, the OP will also see
it and try your suggestion. :)
