Problems with Win16 applications

Jocob Traolli

Whenever I try to start a Win16 application I get the following
message:

[16 bit Windows Subsystem]
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to
terminate the application.

I don't have autoexec.nt in windows\system32 directory.

Some time ago I didn't have these problems, but I don't know which
change in system resulted in such a strange behavoir.

Please help.

Copy them (Autoexec.nt and Config.nt) from your \windows\repair directory to
\windows\system32 directory. Before you start any DOS program make sure to
set these files to 'Read Only' , preventing it from another destruction.

Hi Jocob,

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based
program

This should help resolve this common problem. Basically, you will have to
expand new copies of command.com, autoexec.nt, and config.nt to the system32
folder from the WinXP CD or I386 folder on your hard drive. Sometimes, you
need to create new ones and overwrite the existing ones - the method is
described in the article.

I've also found it useful to kill ntvdm.exe and wowexec.exe before running
the program using Task Manager when this occurs.

Goto c:\windows\repair, there should be a copy of autoexec.nt in that
folder, copy it to the system32 folder, you may need to reboot, I can't
remember.

Also note that problems with these files can be due to a trojan. Do a
thorough scan for malware.

Can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and creating
registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:
