problems with vista...new computer

Hi everyone.
I just bought a new laptop and it came with windows vista. I've had nothing
but problems with this. If I try to use programs like soulseek and utorrent,
my internet connection stops working. When I use CuteFTP, every time I click
on something it makes this annoying beeping sound, even after I turned off
the sound options. I have read about people having this beep problem with
soulseek as well. I haven't even tried connecting my printer and scanner to
this, but I have read about people who had problems with compatibility. I
also can't watch certain videos on the internet, I don't know if this has to
do with probelms with flash or not.
I am thinking about completely wiping my hard drive to get rid of vista and
installing the XP software that I bought awhile ago. Is this possible to do
if there is absolutely nothing on the hard drive? Or, is it possible to
install XP and use it while still keeping everything that came with this
computer on the hard drive, even if it has vista on it?

I don't see where soulseek claims to be vista compatible.

uTorrent works fine on many machines. So something is not right elsewhere.

What version of CuteFTP are you using? Also, read this:

As to why your "network stops working", we'd have to dig down further.

When you say it's "not working", what exactly is happening? You can no
longer browse the web?

Please describe your internet setup. You have a laptop, what about a
router? DSL, cable?

Software like BootitNG allows you to resize an existing partition and
install a different operating system(s) into the resulting free space.
www.bootitNG.com It will give you a menu at startup to choose which system
to use. This sounds daunting but it's not that difficult. There are
step-by-steps and a number of instructional videos in the supprt area of the
website and a link to a dedicated support newsgroup.

Right now I am wireless. What I meant was that whenever I start up either
soulseek or utorrent, the programs will crash, and also when I open up IE,
this also crashes. I cannot open any webpages.
I use CuteFTP 4.2

So you boot to Vista desktop and you try to open IE then it crashes?

You ever have a serious driver problem or a serious hardware problem
(memory...).

I would call the manufacture. That is 100% unacceptable.

Did it do that from beginning? Or only after you installed certain
software? If the later, then try a restore of the machine. Backup you data
and see if IE works after that. If so then be careful about the software
you install.

This only happens after I open the software. If these programs are not open
and running, then I can run IE just fine. I don't know why the software
would be a problem because I've always been able to use them in XP, and many
other people use these programs with no problems. I just bought this laptop
and it came with 1 gig of memory, which is twice as much as I have ever had
before.

Vista is not XP. That's why they do not run properly. Honestly if the
program was within true spec of XP then it should run fine on Vista however
that is not the case. As I mentioned uTorrent should be fine. I would stop
using the other apps. Wait for the developers to update their apps to
function properly in Vista.

You asked why XP apps don't work on Vista. My answer is the only general
answer. To go further you need to look at each individual program.
yet you say that utorrent should work for me, and

Let's go back a step:

The deduction is, "it should work". It was never addressed further. You
made it seem as if going back to XP was an option. I didn't bother going
further yet.

I took the liberty to try uTorrent with three more Vista installations.
That makes 4 that work fine for me. I see some people are having issues
with speed but that's about it.

One suggestion I came across (which doesn't explain uTorrent working on many
machiines) is to try changing your net.max_halfopen setting to under 5. It
seems to default to 8.

Go to Options -> Preferences -> Advanced -> net.max_halfopen and experiment
with it. Try setting it to below 5.
