Problems with USB ports

I am also having problems with my USB ports. I have a
Gateway computer, Pentium III, running WinXP. I don't
know if this is a Microsoft problem or a Gateway problem,
so I'm starting here in search of answers. My 2 of the 3
USB ports in the back of my computer seem to work fine.
But the 3rd one causes my computer to shut off immediately
if I plug anything into it. That's problem #1.

Problem #2 are the 2 USB ports in the front of my
computer. One of them seems to work fine, while the other
doesn't work at all.

I have already checked in the Device Manager to make sure
the ports are enabled; and I have long since installed all
the required XP drivers for my printer, scanner, external
zip drive, etc.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get all my USB
port working all at the same time?

Normally, recent PC's have a total of 6-USB ports.
4 will be on the back panel and 2 are cabled from a
motherboard connector to the front sockets. You may
have a "miss-wired" cable on the front socket. (That
would be a Gateway problem). If the cable is connected
backwards, then plugging a device into it would create a
"Short-Circuit" and cause a power fault that would shut
down the PC.

Through BIOS configuration, the number of ports is
controlled. It might be that only a certain number can be
enabled at any one time. I would consult your users
manual to find out about the port configuration.
If you re-post with your particular model #, we can check
the on-line documentation. However, the first situation
sounds like a factory default.

Hi,

That sounds like a hardware problem, either that or there is insufficient
power for those USB ports to run the devices you are plugging into them.

Have you got any solution? I do have the same problem in
Toshiba 2410 note book running XP prof + SP1. While
plugging in ISDN TA (www.micronet.com.tw) the memory dump
occurs.
