Problems with up-grade to XP-Pro from ME

I have been trying unsuccessfully to up-grade to XP-Pro
from ME on my Compaq Presario 5000, all goes well until
it starts copying CAB files (about half way through) then
I receive a fatal exception OE has occurred message . The
Windows disk has been replaced by my software supplier
but unfortunately the second copy also has the same
problem at the same place.

I have been told that it is my CD player that is the
problem and I should copy the XP programme to my second
heard -drive and try installing it from there. Will this
work?

If you have a windows cd from microsoft, install cd,exit the info page, restar
computer,boot to xp cd,then select,install xp,it'll say a previous windows os exist
select delete it,then it'll reformat the drive and do a clean install of xp.You dont nee
and xp certainly doesnt need ME files, one thing ME uses FAT32,XP uses ntf
file system.
