Problems with Trend Sysclean and Housecall

I noticed my system slowing down recently. I have NAV & Firewall, Adaware and
the betaversion of MS anti spyware all of which are kept up to date and none
of which indicated any virus problems.
As a further check I tried running Trend Sysclean. I downloaded Sysclean and
the latest pattern files but when I tried to run the .bat file I got a bloack
DOS type screen with the message “Sysclean\pattern.txt not opened for READ,
error code [0].†In attempting to close the DOS type window it restarted my
computer.
I then tried to run Trend Housecall on line checker. It gets past the first
page indicating the all is OK but when I click to proceed it goes to the
second page and hangs. In the bar at the bottom of IE it says “Applet
HCClient notinited†and in a grey box in the middle of the page it says
“Control exception: Access denied (java.util.PropertyPermis……… the rest can’t
be seen.
Sometimes when I start up I get the "New hardware Found" dialogue for no
apparant reason.
I have plenty of disk space and regularly defrag and do a general clean-up.
My WinXP is also fully up to date.
Has anybody else had such a problem?
Any help would be appreciated.

Run sysclean.com, there is no .bat file. Are you unzipping the pattern
file to the Sysclean folder ?

What hardware is the system finding on startup ?

thanks for your response.
<<Run sysclean.com, there is no .bat file.>> There is a .bat file in
my Sysclean folder. I don't have a .com file. I just tried running
SysClean again from the Sysclean_FE link shortcut. Same error message
and when i tried to close the DOS type window i got a further message
that Windows could not close this window and my system re-started.

<<Are you unzipping the pattern file to the Sysclean folder ? >> Yes.

<<What hardware is the system finding on start>> The first time it had
no identity in the Found New Hardware dialogue box, the second time it
found a USB device. I had not changed the hardware set-up.

Having just moved from a village that has Broadband to one that is
still on dial-up, i had to get another analogue modem. I got a PeaBird
V92 modem (French make) but it was not signed for XP. This did give me
stability problems even after i downloaded their so called WinXP
drivers. I finally dug out mu old US Robotics 56K Messanger Modem
which still works fine. The stability problems - not always being able
to dial beyond "Opening Port" - have now disappeared but I feel that
the spectre of the PeaBird modem still lingers on.

It just seemed strange that I was having problems with TWO Trend progs
- Sysclean and Housecall.

If there is no sysclean.com in your folder, you didn't get Sysclean
properly. Here are the Sysclean instructions again. For a more
automated method of getting Sysclean and the pattern files, you can use
Dave Lipman's Sysclean_FE from:
http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp - Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made.

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

The only scanner that found anything other than the normal cookies that
Ad Aware finds was found by MS Antispy but although it says it found one item
it doesn't seem to tell you what it is.

Where is the item located ? What type of item is it,i.e. an .exe file,
etc.? Click on the item that MSAS identified and then the plus sign next
to it. Now left click on the item and you should get more info.
