Problems with System Restore

Help needed please!
I noticed that my used space on my harddrive have increased from 13.4 gb to
49.1gb after noting that my spayware and antivirus scans were taking longer
than usual.

Fearing that something I had recently downloaded was responsible I used
system restore to go back a few days (prior to the download, expecting to it
to reset the PC at the lower amount).however, when I checked it had got worse
and had increased to 75.1gb used!

I therefore unrestored this restore point to get back to the current
setting, where the had drive space had increased to 100gb. this leave me
with only 11.5gb free.

I beleive that these must be something wrong with the system restore function.

Previously I have lost all ability to use system restoe and was force to
reset the machine to the factory settings using the manufactures
"installation" process, slthough this mean I had to reload abosolutely
everything, including SP2.

I do not wish to do this again, so would like to know what is going wrong
and causing the hard drive space to be eaten up. if I attempt a system
restore again I fear that the PC will crash as all the hard drive space is
used up!

Can anyone help please?

Thank you

Mark spyware will set up house in the restore file to deleat this you have to
run your security software and deleat your restore points by turning off
system restore.
This I have been through and the best thing you can do is Back up your hard
drive once you know the system is running well. Check out this site it will
help http://forums.techguy.org

I have run Wndows Defender and AGV free and they cannot locate any problems.
What is the best free backup utility that is easy for "dummies" like me? I
have gone the the site you suggested but am not sure exactly where to look...
please advise. Is there a way without turning off system restore? The only
was I know to return the PC back is as mentioned, ie back to the factory
state 3 years ago!
