Problems with standby function

I recently strated using the standby function to temporarily power down the
computer. But since doing so I have had problems powering up- both after
going into standby and powering up after completely shutting down. I get a
blank grey screen, the hard drive does not sound like it is kickin in. All I
can do is hold down the power button until the computer turns off and try
again, it can take a number of tries before it starts up.
I have Pentium D 2.66MHz processor, with 1 Gig RAM. Running Windows XP Home
with SP2. Computer otherwise working well.
I would greatly appreciate your advice.

Standby has always had problems. Some hardware just isn't designed to be
put to sleep and then wake up without a problem. So many things have to be
designed for standby to work properly, it is unlikely that standby will ever
work truly as it was intended.
