Problems with Shrinking Volume

Mike

Hi fellas.
I'm using a laptop with preinstalled Vista Home Premium, and is facing some
problems.
My laptop comes with a 67GB C: and 40GB D:(another 4.88G is preinstalled
one-key recovery and I don't want to lose the feature),and I really don't
like that big a C:.
Every time I try to shrink my big C: partition,Vista stops with something
called an "unexpected error" after several minutes.
Some of my schoolmates have the similar model from the very same
manufactor,and when I tried shrinking the volume,it's trouble-free.
Also I have free ubuntu CDs and is looking forward to install a dual-boot
consisting Vista and Ubuntu Linux(as my school course is somehow involved
with Linux).
Does anyone have any idea on how to make the "Shrinking Volume" work?I
really can't afford those highly-priced 3rd party tools, and hope to solve
all the issues without paying too much.
Thanks to you all.

I got the LiveCD,recorded it onto a CDRW,and restarted the computer.
The problem is that it just won't boot into Xwindows, and the message shown
says that I need Xwindows start to use it.
I'm using an ASUS A8H56JR-SL with ATI Mobility Raedon X2300 inside, perhaps
that is the problem.
My e-mail service provider keeps rejecting mail to discussions.microsoft.com
so I'm sending the reply to the newsgroup.
Still thanks for your help.My next step is to try trial version of Acronis
Disk Director 10.0
PS:I can shrink D:,but not C:,maybe something is messed up in C:.:-(

Acronis will work I do have it, and is very good but suggested "Gparted"
because the trial version of Acronis will show you what you can do but you
have to buy the full version to complete the task.
If you have a LiveCD of Linux (Ubuntu) if you load that you should be able
to use Gparted whilst in Ubuntu demo mode without actually installing Ubuntu.
I should have suggested that in the first place, , I most probably didn't
read your fist post properly.

Goodluck
