Problems with Opening Mail Merge from Word

I'm trying to open a mail merge document I saved and when
I try it freezes up. It begins to open and then opens a
blank Excel spreadsheet and lists the following message
along the status bar:

"Waiting for Microsoft Excel to accept DDE Commands"

Not sure what is going on and what I can do to fix this.
