I tried to install Windows xp home edition. The message
came up that i had several programs causing it not to
install. One of these was my modem. How can this be a
problem?? I have 56K modem. Any suggestions?

Hi Barbara,

It sounds like your particular brand of 56K modem doesn't pass the hardware
compatibility for Windows XP. There are numerous hardware items/software
programs that are not compatible with XP, especially older items/programs
(is your modem possibly ISA vs. PCI?).

There is an Upgrade Advisor that you can run on that PC (provided it has
internet access) either online or d/load it and run it locally:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
or you could run the Compatibility Check that is on the install CD and see
what recommendations it has for your incompatible hardware/software.
Some hardware/software can simply be upgraded (eg., upgraded drivers for
hardware, upgrade version for software), others must be removed in order for
XP to be installed.

If you find yourself shopping for a new modem/new software, you might want
to check it out with the Windows Catalog before purchasing, to ensure that
it will be XP compatible:
