problems with fn key

please can you help me??? i am having to type this while holding down my fn
key as if i don't i get numbers for certain letters and it is doing my head
in. does anyone know why this is happening? i have pulled the key off to
make sure it is not stuck but it is still not working

i have a laptop computer

i am really looking forward to hearing from you

To activate/deactivate the embedded numeric keypad, press <Num Lk>.
(The Num Lock indicator lights up).

It depends on what laptop you have, but with Thinkpads, you turn on/off
NumLock by pressing Shift + ScrLk/
