Problems with files and settings transfer wizard

I bought a new computer running xp and am trying to transfer old files and
settings from the old computer (running ME). Since one computer is replacing
the other, they are not networked. I connected both computers with a serial
cable. when i run the wizard both computers cannot connect to each other.
Window reads: Attempting to connect to the other computer, this may take a
minute (or something like that). However, after about 30 minutes I think it's
taking too long. Is there any other way to connect the computers other than
networking or serial cable?
