Problems with DVDs

This may be in the wrong subject area, since it may be a software
problem, I'm not sure. But hopefully someone will be able to help me
out!
I use my laptop to play DVDs, since I'm too poor to be able to afford a
separate player lol. But recently I have been having problems. Playing
normal discs that I have bought is fine. But when I try to play discs I
recorded myself, I have no luck. After ages the computer still says no
disc is inserted and therefore I cannot play it. The problem discs are
all in the DVD+R format and used to work fine in the drive. It is not a
disc related problem since they work fine in other players.
Sometimes recording to DVD+R discs still works, but sometimes I get a
message "Please insert a new disc" before any writing takes place.
Does anyone have any idea why my discs are no longer working?
Cheers, Steve.

Just a thought, but if it comes and goes like that, you may have
hardware failing as it gets warmer.

Looks like a weak laser but before condemning the drive try a laser lens
cleaner disc.

I dont think it could be due to stuff getting warmer, since it also
happens as soon as you turn the computer on.

Then perhaps as another posted, dirty lens?

It is possible that the brand of media is the problem. Some drives are more
picky than others and will refuse to work with some brands. Check the
manual for the drive to find out what brands the manufacturer recommends.
When you find one that works consistently with the drive, stick with it.
