Problems with cell references

I have just updated to EXCEL 2003 and i have a large EXCEL2000 file. It has loaded ok, but, everytime I copy the cell reference changes (from ABCD for Columns and 1234 for rows, to R1C1 format i.e 1234 for both columns and rows)

This changes all my formulas !!!

I then have to go into options and unselect the R1C1 tick box. This chages it all back to ABCD etc

Question is how do I keep normal references permantently

I have tried selecting all sheets going to options and unselecting the tick box, then saving. This doesntseems to work ! Any suggestions

Yours in frustration

Paul

Hi Pauljose!

First establish that it isn't a setting in your Personal.xls that is
doing this.

Windows > Unhide
Select Personal.xls
Tools > Options > General
Remove Check from R1C1 Reference style
OK
Save
Windows > Hide

When you close, make sure that you do elect to save changes to the
Personal.xls or you will find future openings of Excel will have the
unhidden Personal.xls file.

There are other potential causes, but let's get the most common one
eliminated first.

Tools, Options, General, (uncheck) R1C1 References

If that doesn't fix things, then close each of open workbooks,
and unhide your personal.xls workbook and change the options,
then rehide your personal.xls workbook again.

The options are based on the first workbook opened.

Paul,

This shouldn't be big problem.

There is a way to set a reference to a cell or cells.

Let's say you've got a cell, am30, and you want
a cell pointing to am30 no matter where it
is in a spreadsheet.

You can say =$am$30

You can copy / cut, whatever, move this sucker
where ever you want and it will always point to am30.

Then you can use the Edit - Find - Replace command to
put your $'s in those pointer cells for you.

I think that will solve your problem.
