Problems with ATI TV Wonder USB

I have used this for years with my laptop, which is a 5 year old SONY
Viao with windows 2000. Before that, I used it with my old Dell with
Windows 98. For the most part, it is has worked. I use it to make
transcripts for my website for the soaps.

I currently have three separate problems and ATI technical support has
not been very helpful (to be fair, I haven't phoned them yet, only
emailed them).

Problem #1 I had to reinstall the software (Multimedia Center 7.4) this
year because I had my laptop repaired and they reinstalled Windows
2000. It will not install correctly, apparently, because the timer
function will no longer work (when I go to the timer setup,
closed-captioning is not listed there, so I can only use it "live", not
with the timer). It still runs daytime transcripts just fine, but I
can't set it up with the timer and always have to do it manually, which
can be inconvenient. Minor problem. And yes I tried reinstalling a few
times but it didn't help.

My second problem, and the one I care about the most, is that when I
try to run it with certain primetime shows, it will not save the
closed-captioning transcript properly. Normally it saves the CC as an
html file and all of the dialogue (the transcript from the CC) is
there. I have tried "Smallville" and "Charmed". It took me about ten
tries, but I finally got one episode of Smallville to work. It does not
work for Charmed and when I try to do another ep of Smallville....still
trying to get it to work. What happens is the file is blank. Now, I
KNOW these shows have closed-captioning because I can see it on the ATI
program's little TV screen on my laptop. It also shows up on the TV
itself if I turn on the CC feature on my TV. For some reason, the ATI
is just not able to save it as the html file. I also tried saving it
as a text file with the same results. However, it will work fine with
DVD's of these shows, just not current episodes that I have recorded
off the TV.

I should probably explain that I always have the ATI plugged into the
VCR because that is most convenient for me. It works fine in all other
cases. I have a DVR satellite receiver from DISH network that the VCR
is connected to and that is what I recorded the shows onto. I have also
tried recording the show and running the ATI from the video but that
does not help.

Is there something in these shows that prevents the ATI from working,
or is it something in the software? Or maybe it's the DVR somehow
that's causing the problems?

FYI I know there are more recent versions of the software, but when I
go to the ATI page to look for the driver software, it always tells me
to use 7.4 (because I have Windows 2000, I guess?). Will more current
software work with Windows 2k? I will try anything at this point.

ATI only sent me their automated reply:
Based on our experience, Multimedia Center related issues are usually
due to improper software installation or system configuration settings.
Click the following link to review the full details for trouble
shooting
Multimedia Center related issues.
The link they gave me did not help at all.

My third problem is that when I tried to run the ATI from my main
computer, a Dell with Windows XP, it does not work at all. The screen
goes black when I try to run it and I get an error message. ATI told
me to change something in the BIOS, which I am reluctant to do because
I know that can really mess up my computer. While I know a lot about
computere, I am far from an expert, so I don't want to risk it. I
argued with them about it because I only get the error when I try
running the ATI software, but they tried to claim it has to do with the
BIOS and not from their software (passing the buck, as most tech
support does). I gave up on that one because it's not VITAL that I use
the ATI with the PC (it would just be kinda nice).

Any further help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I think I figured out why the primetime shows like Charmed and
Smallville were not working when I ran the transcripts. I think when I
checked the box that said to take out the commercials, for some reason
it couldn't see the difference, so it just took out everything. I'm
still testing it but I'm pretty sure that's the reason. Yay! I would
still like help on the other two issues if anyone thinks they can help.
