Problems with ADobe Acorobat...

We are currently running Adobe ver 6 on our terminal servers.

This app really stinks as a term server app. In order for it to even
function properly, their documentation states that you must use the
autologon facilty to make sure that your term server is logged on as the
administrator whenever it reboots!!! (an obvious security risk!!)

I really did not want to do this but had no choice as almost ALL of our
drawings are emailed via PDF's so it is a necessity for it to work. This
procedure seemed to work for a while, but now for some rediculous reason,
whenever the term server reboots, no TS client can print to PDF (they simply
get an error) UNLESS I go over to the term server(s) and from the console
(logged on as the admin) print a job to PDF. When the PDF job completes,
other TS clients can then print to PDF!!! There must be something being set
internally when I do this...

Does this not sound very bizarre??

Has anyone had similiar issues with Adobe on term servers? We have not yet
looked at ver 7.0 - maybe there is a fix?

Is there some other piece of software that can be used on the term server to
produce PDF's other than Adobe that works well?

Thanks,

Brad

If you just need basic PDF creating capability take a look at
pdf995. It is only $10 per user for the basic capability, and
runs fine under TS (there are minor tweaks that should be
done, but no big deal)

If you don't like pdf995 there are tons of other reasonably
priced pdf packages for you to consider. google

Thanks.

We have been using PDF 5.0 on terminal server reliably for years. It doesn't
have nearly as much overhead as 6.0 and reads all PDF's I have version 6.0
on my work station class machines for editing and intensive work. I was
considering upgrading Terminal Servers to version 6 or 7 but now will
continue with version 5 because it is more well suited for the environment.

Iwas pulling my hair out for several weeks, like you my company lives and
dies by PDF. I ran into the same issues with 6.0, was told that it had to do
with the OEm version we were using instead of the full retail or open
versions. So I went out and bought 7.0 to try, worse results there are known
issues with the piracry protection on 7.0 and RAID or JBOD. After that I
stated downloading and testing some of the other pdf creators out there. I
got mixed results some whould handle our Cad drawings well and some would do
a good job with text. The only one of the 13 I tested that produced good
results for both was CutePDF and that was free!! Cute offers an open
developer driver designed to optimize TS which I plan to buy in the near
future for $200.00 far less expensive than some of the others that I tested
in the $1200.00-2500.00 range. I have had good success with 6.0 and 7.0
reader and all versions of 6.0 Acrobat when using them for manipulation of
previously created documents.....just kill the adobe print driver.

Thanks for your help on this. I will check into Cute PDF. I did downlaod and
install pdf995 and it seems to work well... It's always good to have a few
tools in your arsenal!

Thanks,

Brad
