Im using windows xp and NAV 8.1 updated, winxp firewall, and defender
but lately opening a single txt file takes at least 2 or 3 minutes the first
time, and after a short time it happens again.
in the desktop a right click on a shortcut is quick, but a right click on a
txt or a data file takes 3 minutes to respond.
could be a virus type problem?
I've cleaned temps, defragmented, chkdsk in exclusive mode etc. but haven't
helped
any help accepted

when you right click on the filename, do you get "open with" option? since
it is a .txt file, will it eventually open in notepad or wordpad? when you
go to mycomputers, tools, folder options, file types - what is txt set up
for....

yeh, but saying that is has never been changed may not be entirely true
because something changed and there could be a number of reasons. i suggest
you download a free ware program called note tab plus. it is an enhanced
version of notetab. by installing this you can see if this program also has
the same problem with txt files. it can then provide some clues if you have
a notepad related issue or antivirus related issue or.......

Are you by any chance in Windows explorer when you're trying to open the
file(s)?

This problem sounds familiar, and depending on whether or not you're using
windows explorer could be a rather difficult problem to fix. Is it just text
files that take so long? What about word or excel files?

that has never been changed, its the notepad,
if I try to open any file, if I do a ctrl-copy it happens the same,
it happens in any directory with any file that contains data, I dont need to
open it, just a right click and voilá, have to wait
gets me crazy,
