Problems using IE7 - reverted to IE6

MaryL

I installed Internet Explorer 7 today and immediately used System Restore to
go back to my earlier settings with IE6. In fact, it was only on my
computer for about 5 minutes!

Here are the problems I encountered:
(1) The task bar that enables me to click on the mail icon and access
newsgroups was missing.
(2) The bar that includes access to Help files was also missing -- as a
result, I could not get to newsgroups and also could not use Help files to
learn how to bring back the missing features.
(3) The tabs feature seemed unnecessarily cumbersome.

I accept that Item #3 may be based on the fact that I gave it so little time
(or, more correctly, gave *myself* so little time to learn about it).
However, Items #1 and #2 are very important to me -- and I could not even
get to this newsgroup to ask these questions while IE7 was on the screen.

Can anyone help/provide suggestions? If not, I will simply stick with IE6.

Thanks,
MaryL

go to tools and check menu bar...now you have the options as IE6

to get the email: right click an empty place in the IE7 bar - go to
customize commamd bar - select add or remove commands, customize tollbar
window will open here select what you need and click add...hit close when
finish...(if you want to reset the tool bar to default hit reset) now you see
two >> at the right of tools click here and you see now your options

The bar that should contain tools was missing. That's why I also could not
access help files -- that function would (should) have been on the same bar.
I removed IE7 and am not going to reinstall it for awhile because I went to
one of the IE7 newsgroups after reading another message here, and there are
a *huge* number of problems similar to mine. So, I'll stick with IE6 for
awhile. However, I will keep your answer in my files in case I need the
information when I do eventually reinstall IE7. In the meantime, do you
have any ideas for a workaround for the missing bar with File, Edit, Tools,
Help, etc.? (Incidentally, I said I "removed" IE7 -- by that, I mean I did
not use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Instead, I went back to the
Restore Point I had set immediately before installing IE7.)

Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure why you posted in this manner. I posted a message here, then
realized that this is not the correct place for IE7 questions. I
specifically noted in my introduction when I posted in the other newsgroup
that I seldom post in more than one group and was posting a duplicate only
because I could see that it was a more appropriate source for my question.

So, I will also apologize to this group. I do *not* make it a practice to
crosspost.

Mary, crossposting to a select few, appropriate groups is ok. Crossposting
means sending the same message to multiple groups at the same time. That
way everyone sees the message and all responses no matter in which group it
was made. This can only be done using a newsreader. The web interface does
not have that capability. What one should not do is multipost which is
posting the same question to different groups but separately. This
duplicates effort because some people respond in multiple newsgroups and
it's hard to keep track how one responded elsewhere.

You're using OE which has the facility to crosspost. In this case you
didn't realize until after you posted to windowsxp.general that the internet
explorer newsgroup might have been more appropriate. Stuff like that
happens - no big deal. I just wanted to clarify that crossposting, in
certain cases, to a few relevant groups is ok.

Not to complain, but to clarify: there is nothing wrong with crossposting
(sending a single message addressed to multiple groups) when it's done to a
small number of related groups. The problem is with *multi-posting* (sending
the same message *separately* to more than one newsgroup). Doing so just
fragments the thread, so someone who answers in one newsgroup doesn't get to
see answers from others in another newsgroup. And for those who read all the
newsgroups the message is multiposted to, they see the message multiple
times instead of once (they would see it only once if you correctly
crossposted instead). This wastes everyone's time, and gets you poorer help
than you should get.

Crossposting sometimes gets a bad rap because it's the traditional tool of
the spammer, who send his single spam message addressed to lots of unrelated
newsgroups. But if you use crossposting intelligently, and don't do that,
there's nothing wrong with it.
