Problems upgrading from Win 98 to XP Home Edition

In upgrading 3 Dell tower systems from Win 98 to XP Home
Edition we experienced the following problems. It is
important to note that none of the systems had any
problems or conflicts under Win 98 before the upgrade, no
hardware changes were made to any of the systems, jumpers
on all the drives on all systems were checked and are
correct.

System 1
A single hard drive system with a cd drive and a zip
drive. During a full installation XP with a format of
the hard drive XP identified the hard drive as C.

CMOS has the hard drive as the primary master, the cd as
the secondary master, and the zip drive as the secondary
slave, in agreement with the jumpers.

After the upgrade to XP either under my computer or
windows explorer the zip drive is designated as C, the cd
as D and the hard drive as E

What do we need to do to get the hard drive designated as
C as it should be? Software requirements and
compatibility with the other systems require this.

System 2

A 2 hard drive system with a cd drive and a zip drive.
During a full installation XP with a fat 32 format of the
C drive XP identified the primary hard drive as C the D
was not touched.

CMOS has the primary hard drive as the primary master,
the second hard drive as the primary slave, the cd as the
secondary master, and the zip drive as the secondary
slave, in agreement with the jumpers

After the upgrade to XP either under my computer or
windows explorer all drive designations were correct but
the second hard drive was not displayed. It was
displayed under device manager and reported as working
properly.

How do we get access to the second hard drive from within
XP?

System 3

A 2 hard drive system with a cd drive and a zip drive.
During a upgrade XP with no format of the C drive XP
identified the primary hard drive as C the D was not
touched.

the second hard drive as the primary slave, the cd as the
secondary master, and the zip drive as the secondary
slave, in agreement with the jumpers

That happens if a Zip drive is present at the time of install. Either
live with the result, or unwind things and repeat the install with the
Zip drive removed - installing it afterwards
