Problems Trying To Defrag

When ever I attempt to run a scan disk or defrag it stops
and immediately gives me a message of, "dfrgntfs.exe has
generated problems and will be closed by windows. You will
need to restart the program." Then in the Defrag window
and message of Engine Connection Lost is shown... What's
causing this and how can I fix it?

What do you mean by "Scan Disk"? Are you referring to Check
Disk/chkdsk.exe? Searching groups.google.com suggests problems with he file
system, and running "chkdsk.exe /r" might fix it.
