Hi

I'm having problems starting my PC which is running XP Pro and hope someone
can help.

When I switch the PC on it boots as far as the XP screen with the left to
right slider bar that shows it's still booting up. This slider bar is static
when it should be moving left to right. I then have to switch the PC off and
on and it gives me an option to go into Safe Mode which I do. I go into safe
mode, restart the machine and it then boots fine into XP.

Any thoughts on what might be the issue.

Thanks

Some basic maintenance operations are called for. First, you need to
verify that the volume (partition) that XP is on is not in a "Dirty" state.
Basically, it means the data on the drive is inconsistent. To check this:
Click Start, Run (Type) Cmd [Enter]
From within the Command Prompt Window type >Chkdsk C: [Enter]
Watch the statistics, if you see no text that recommends a /F run of
Chkdsk the drive is OK.
You can also quickly determine if the "Dirty" Flag is set on a volume by
typing this from the Command Prompt >
fsutil dirty query C:

Next you need to check the System Event Log. You may have issues
with Services "Hanging" on boot. This should be logged in the log.
Click Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
When the console view opens it will be in "Small Footprint" mode, so it
helps to either maximize the window or enlarge. Click the System Log
in the Left Pane and then examine the Right Pane for Red Icons that
denote errors. Clicking on each entry will bring up the details box that
shows the Event ID # and a brief description.
The following web site provides a look up table on Event ID codes:

This is the classic symptom of a failing power supply. The power supply
doesn't have enough "juice" to get the drive spinning up fast enough to
completely load the operating system. After repeated restarts the drive
has enough momentum to boot. Although other things could certainly cause
your problem, my first troubleshooting step on this system would be to
swap out the power supply with a known-working one. If that solves the
problem, replace the failing power supply.

You need to quote at least a part of the message to which you reply.
