problems starting applications

For the past week or two I have had problems starting normal applications or
even opening up folders on the desktop. I will double-click on IE or on a
folder and then nothing happens. There may be an hourglass for a few
seconds when trying to start the app., but then it goes away and nothing. Or,
the icons on the desktop may disappear and then come back. Some apps work,
others don't.

The same problem occurs when using the Start Button.

I can sometimes get rid of the problem by rebooting, but often not.

By the way, Netscape (the newest version) always works; IE usually does not.
How about that Bill?

Thanks for any help
Dan

Hi Slowfeet,
Did you Run the Command : sfc.exe on your Computer or chkdsk.exe and see
if there are corrupt files and let chkdsk repair them.
Is your system clean from Malware/Viruses.
Do you have enough Disk space and RAM for the hungry Applications.
Hope this helps

Thanks nass,
I didn't run those initially, but did after you made the suggestion. They
didn't show any problems. My system is protected from both viruses and
spyware, so I don't think those are likely. Also, I've got a gig of RAM and
lots of room on the hard drive as my machine is just a couple of months old.
Any other thoughts? Should I think about reinstalling XP (or maybe moving to
Linux)?
Dan
