problems shutting down/logging off

My son downloaded something onto the computer...that has
since been removed. Since that time...we are having
trouble shutting down the computer/logging off/switching
users. I have tried starting in safe mode and
doing "last know good configuration" but problem still
exist. I am a new computer user...and a lot of the
info I have received is over my head as far as being able
to understand it. I need some simple instructions as
what to do next? I have already had to re-install
Windows once before...and I am hoping not to do that
again.

had this problem myself on XP Home Ed. Where after you
click shutdown/switch user nothin seems to happen yes??

Dont blame your son its just a common problem so i was
told and it will go away with time just clean up some
disc space and defrag your drives. basic maitainance
should stop any hang like this
